Koykan and Corda Lighting: A story about light and the experience of space

In the interior of a restaurant, every decision is important, and lighting often proves to be crucial. It is not just a technical solution, but an element that shapes the atmosphere, determines the rhythm of the space and emphasizes the very essence of the experience, food and togetherness around the table. In the newly opened Koykan restaurant in the Supernova shopping center in Zadar, our lighting is part of the 'tool' whose task is to achieve this. We are proud to have been given the trust and opportunity to participate in creating an environment that combines a modern gastronomic concept and a carefully designed space.

PORTRAIT OF AN ICON Ettore Sottsass, the designer who gave lighting a postmodern spirit

In the history of 20th-century design, there are few names that evoke as much fascination and divided opinion as Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007). Born in Innsbruck, raised in Turin, and building his career primarily in Milan, Sottsass was a figure who constantly balanced between architecture, industrial design, and artistic experimentation.

Living room lighting: How to create the perfect atmosphere

The living room is a space where relaxation, socializing, and various activities are intertwined. For this reason, lighting for the living room must be layered and well-thought-out. A single ceiling lamp can rarely satisfy all needs – from general visibility, through an intimate atmosphere, to directional light for reading. Poorly planned lighting creates shadows and makes the space monotonous, while a well-composed system of light sources emphasizes functionality and gives the space warmth.

Why magnetic rails can be a problem if you install them yourself

When a customer thinks about built-in magnetic tracks, the most common question is: is the installation something they can do themselves or is it better to call an electrician? A built-in magnetic track consists of an aluminum profile, power supply and connection points, and various light modules such as spotlights, linear or pendants are later magnetically inserted into it. The idea itself seems simple and modular, but behind it lies a serious electrical lighting system.

A LOOK INTO THE PAST How and when electric lighting arrived in Zagreb

Zagreb resisted the introduction of electric public lighting for a long time. Although citizens first witnessed an electric light on the corner of Gundulićeva and Ilica in 1877, the city authorities at the time continued to trust gas lamps. Despite the advice and visionary proposals of Nikola Tesla, who in 1892 proposed electrifying the city and building a hydroelectric power plant, the interests of the gas company and the costs of new systems slowed down the changes.

Lighting for business premises: How the Corda pendant shaped the identity of DPD City Depot

When furnishing the interior of the DPD City Depot in Zagreb, special attention was paid to the visual impression the space makes on its users. At the center of this impression is a striking pendant lamp called Cluster, made of aluminum and saturated glass. With its 150 cm diameter and 12 scattered light balls on E14 sockets, this compositional lighting goes beyond pure functionality – it visually organizes the space and creates a strong aesthetic signature of the brand.

PORTRAIT OF AN ICON Serge Mouille: ‘Sculptor of Light’ whose designs are still breathtaking today

When it comes to icons that influenced 20th-century lighting design, the name Serge Mouille is unavoidable. This French sculptor and metal lamp designer created a collection that still shapes spaces today as powerfully as the light it emits.

Nikola Tesla and his light of the future

When we talk about the development of modern lighting, it is hard not to start by asking what would have happened if Edison’s direct current (DC) system had won the “war of electricity” instead of Tesla’s alternating current (AC). Direct current would have required a power plant to be located in close proximity to every street, factory, or home. It cannot withstand long-distance transmission. This would have made mass electrification – and therefore lighting – extremely expensive. It would also be logistically demanding and only available in densely populated urban centers.
